Trail

This one of the last recorded hikes of 2010. The Garmin Edge 605 does not let you store more than 20 hours of hiking trails. It overwrites the oldest ones. So I abandoned recording as I did not have a computer to transfer the trails. We did a total of about 100 miles in 10 days from the average count of hiking hours with an average of 10 miles a day at an average of 3 miles/hour. This was luckily a gorgeous day. We took a 10:00 a.m. boat ride to the island of Capri. The ride takes about 40 minutes. If you do not get seasick you are lucky. I was fine, though a bit nauseous. We took the Funiculare to the top which takes you to the heart of the town of Capri. From there we hiked up about a 1000 feet to the ruins of the palace of the Emperor Tiberius. He retired here after a turbulent reign. This is the most gorgeous spot where the island cuts down to the sea a 1000 feet below. You can hear the howls of the seagulls beneath and the clear blue water. From there we retraced our path where it bifurcates to let you go to the Arco Naturale or the back to the city center. We hiked up to the natural arch. At the top was an orange cat, very friendly who walked some distance with us. Then the path winds down about 500 feet and takes you through some fascinating views along the edge of the Tyrrhenian sea. It is hard to explain the beauty of this region. The view is simply splendid. Winter is a great time to be here if you get a break in the relentless rain. There are few tourists and you can hear the roar of the waves breaking and the screeching of the gulls, nothing else. We hiked back to the city center. Took a bus to another town called Anacapri. A sleeply little village with some old churches. The views along the way are lovely. There are some other wonderful hikes in Anacapri. We saved it for next time....
