Hiking Napoli, 18 December, 2010 (20 miles only 10 recorded): 18 Dec, 2010 (9 miles)

Napoli. What an amazing city! I was apprehensive at first, but this city grows on you. When we had to leave, I did it reluctantly. Not very different from Bombay (!) the roads are narrow, the population density is high, roads are packed with vehicles and road signs and lights are simply suggestions. But Neopolitan drivers are one of the most patient beings I have ever seen. If they see a pedestrian attempting to cross they will stop for you regardless! Its amazing. They love to talk! The food is simply amazing! We hiked approximately 100 miles in 10 days. I managed to record only a few hikes. This is the first 10 miler while getting to know the city. Now we can guide anybody through this lovely city of Napoli. If you ever go there, do not miss Capri; take a boat ride to this lovely island and hike along the ruins of the palace of Tiberius, along beautiful natural arches and along narrow paths grazing deadly drops to the sea. Take the Metropolitana to Pozzuoli-Solfatera to see the sulferous baths and hot steam gushing out of the active crater. Take the Circumvesuviana to Ercolano and Pompeii; to see the ruins preserved by the eruption of Vesuvio. Take a short ride up Vesuvio; still active and fuming. Travel a few hundred meters under Napoli (called Napoli Sotterenea) through several kilometers of cisterns dug out for the rock to build the beautiful buildings around Napoli. Do not miss the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, where you will see some of the best preserved artifacts of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The best thing about Napoli are its citizens -- the Neopolitans!
